First Friday: Bloc5

Bloc5 Exhibiton is a collaboration with the Foundry Commons, Paolo Mejia Fine Art and Design, and Citadel Artist Community of San Jose.

This Bloc5SanJose Exhibition features the work of Agnes Derbin-Caulfield, Stephen Tull, Ruthie Yamada, John Kwak, Willy Baet and Paolo Mejia.

Agnes Derbin-Caulfield’s impressionistic oil paintings explore the beauty of nature through her landscape paintings. Her plein air paintings capture the immediacy and transient  beauty of the Bay Area. Her paintings are thoughtful landscapes depicting locations from her travels.

Stephen Tull’s pottery and sculpture explores the dimensional and tactile nature of the ceramic medium. His pottery explores the beauty of form and the richness of the unexpected glaze colors. His ceramic sculptures may look whimsical and comical, but it captures the state of humility and bravado of life.

Ruthie Yamada’s visual poetry collages are created organically using cut words and vintage fashion images from her previous career as a fashion designer. Her visual poems are inspired by humor, spirituality and love.

Jon Kwak’s conceptual experimentation through 2D and 3D forms is strongly influenced by Dadaism. He reassembles found objects into simplified visual form, which sometimes look complicated, but conceptually have deeper nuances than intricate and complex designs.

Willy Baet’s art utilizes his architectural and mural painting background to explore new concepts. His work juxtaposes classic art of the Renaissance masters with a contemporary vision. Willy challenges the concept of classical and traditional art with a contemporary response within his visual processes.

Paolo Mejia is a multi-disciplinarian visual artist. His design background becomes the foundation of his work as he explores materials, processes and concepts in 2D and 3D form. His conceptual art juxtaposes (un)orthodox materials with the foundation of the Fundamentals and  Elements of Art and Design. As a result, his work with ephemeral concept becomes tangible art.

The Bloc5 SanJose Exhibition Series highlights the art community of the Cannery District of downtown San Jose, west of 280 and SJSU. The Bloc5SanJose movement is hoping to create a stepping-stone to promote art culture in a technologically driven Silicon Valley. We invite the public to visit the Bloc5 exhibit this October through November. Meet and greet our guest artists at the opening reception, see a dynamic and diverse collection of art, and start collecting their work.
