After being struck by the beauty and playfulness Alan experienced at an SF MOMA exhibit of Alexander Calder\u2019s mobiles, Hall\u2019s life in visual art began. His formal study of art commenced at the Art Academy of San Francisco and most recently has included studies at KALA in Berkeley. Mixed media, photography and painting compose his current mix of artistic endeavors. Hall\u2019s studio is in Oakland, California. He is also a musician, teacher and composer.<\/p>\n
Artist \u00a0Statement<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n The pieces in, \u201cBold: The Unpredictable\u201d are about creating order out of chaos. Each metal print has undergone several steps before printing. They often start with a series of loose, spontaneous 3-D collages, quickly captured in digital format. Other steps include surface preparation, projection, photos of photos, filter manipulation and finally, digital editing.<\/em><\/p>\n In this series, which I\u2019ve dubbed \u201cneo-psychedelica\u201d, I\u2019m going for Mandala inspired symmetry that springs out of improvisation and uncertainty. There is a link here to my life as a jazz improviser. When in the midst of an intense jazz performance, each musician must remain focused and centered; yet open to a certain unpredictability inherent in the best jazz groups.
